City of Lakes

Updated: Mar 6, 2020

Bangalore was earlier known as 'City of Lakes'. Though many lakes still exist in Bangalore, some are almost dried up. In recent times, the government and residents have united in order to save some of the city's lakes and restore them. While some are still under restoration, some are already restored with fun activities organized, in order to gather people.

While most of the lakes are often visited, some still remain undiscovered, like the Jakkur lake and Rachenahalli Lake.

Jakkur Lake

Jakkur Lake of northern Bangalore is located in Jakkur, Bangalore. It is located away from the busy life of Bangalore in a calm and serene area, on the road to Kempegowda International Airport.

Occasionally, photography or bird-watching workshops are often organised here. It is open to all. It is an ideal picnic spot for friends and family. Jakkur Aerodrome is also situated within 3 km, wherein adventure activities like parasailing and helicopter rides are often provided.

Timings:

6:00am - 9:00 am

Location:

Jakkur Lake is located between Hebbal and Yelahanka. It can be reached by driving towards Hebbal or Jakkur on the Outer Ring Road. If you wish to travel by public transport, you can board buses plying towards the Outer Ring Road, Hebbal, Jakkur or the airport namely 286 or 291D. You can also transit through taxis, cabs or auto-rickshaws. Self-drive is the best and easy way to reach the Jakkur Lake. It is just a kilometer away from Jakkur Post-Office, and less than 10 km away from Hebbal.

Rachenahalli Lake

Located in Rachenahalli Lake Road, Thannisandra in Bangalore, the lake and its environment are home to a number of marine life and species of birds. Often one can spot water-birds taking off or swimming idly. It is almost unreal to view such a naturally beautiful world coexisting with the urban world.

The lake was restored recently by a group of people called Jalmitra. It has been fenced and a park is built in the entrance of the lake, so that people of any demographic can come and relax here. The park consists of kids playground and gym equipment. There is a path built around the lake for people to walk, jog or simply view the elegance of the lake.

Timings:

5:00am - 9:00 am and 4:00pm - 6:00 pm

Location:

The nearest bus stop is Rachenahalli Cross bus stop, which is 1.1 km away from the lake. It's a 15 min walk from the bus stop or you can hike any auto. One can also head to Nagawara and then pick a cab to the lake.

Both these lakes have been restored recently and these natural beauties co-exist among the man-made and busy city. Come here to relax and take a break from the hustle of life.
